Where is my content? (DIM related)

Since I have to use the beta DS thanks to a new RTX GPU, I figured  I would try DIM out. Spent the last 2 days installing all my content in a fresh new beta DS. When I looked at the content library it was way more organized than my previous manual install version, so I was starting to like DIM quite a bit. Then I went and installed my renderosity files and saw they were not listing in the content library like they should. I then checked the actual DAZ 3D folder for them and saw there was no DIM content there either, but rather a cloud folder. is my content installed elsewhere on my PC or is it all online?

nevermind, I found them, in a folder, outside of the normal DAZ3D folder called Public Documents

Back when Daz was designing DIM a conscious decision was made to install to a different default directory to avoid any chance of clobbering custom user library layouts. That decision has caused no end of trouble. smiley

The /data/cloud folder is used for installs made through Connect. The files are installed there, not on a remote server.

By default DS uses the following content folders:

    • "My DAZ 3D Library" in Public Documents, which is the default folder for content installed by DIM
    • "My Library" in Documents/Daz 3D/Studio, which is the the default folder for content installed manually
    • "My Daz Connect Library" in Documents/Daz 3D/Studio, which is the the default folder for content installed with Connect

Thanks for the info all. My big problem now is DS not finding any of the textures. My old content library without DIM was in the default my documents area. With the new location under "My DAZ 3D Library" in Public Documents, i get the can't locate error every time I import a saved scene from the old content library. The new location is mapped already by default, but it's as if DS doesn't want to look there.

I haven't used DAZ Studio or DIM for awhile. But I decided to create my own folder(s) to allow DIM to automatically install DAZ Stuff. I allow DAZ's default folder structure for textures, etc.  I place my folders (Runtimes) out on the hard drive. I don't place them under "Documents," etc.

I don't think it's a good idea to split up textures, geometries, whatever from the rest of the DAZ install files.

Actually “My Daz 3D library” is not mapped in DS by default so unless you added it yourself it might be the problem.

It should be, on a clean install.

I thought it added "My Library" from Documents but not the one in Public Documents. But I've not done a clean install for years so I might be wrong.

It depends on how new a version it is - 4.9+ should add the public documents My Daz 3D Library, and the user documents /Daz 3d/Studio/My Library and /Daz 3D/Studio/My Daz Connect Library (or is it data?).

yeah, earlier versions went to my documants and the beta goes to the public documents one. So I guess I'll have to copy over the files in the public documents folder over to my documents since getting old saved scenes to work is my primary goal, unless anyone has a better idea.

As long as the old library is properly pointed to in Studio you shouldn't have to move anything.

That's the thing, I used DIM for the first time to see how it would work and it installed my content in a different place than the default in 4.10, so now when I load an old saved scene that i backed up, it doesn't look in the new location, Even though I like how neat and tidy the content library is with the DIM install, if I can't find a way to make DS look in the new location, then I will have to delete (or try moving) the content and just copy over my old backup instead.

You ca use http://docs.daz3d.com/doku.php/public/software/dazstudio/4/referenceguide/scripting/api_reference/samples/file_io/install_manager_config_import/start to update DS to match DIM - just download the script using the link above the code and drag into the DS Viewport.

Thanks for that Richard, but it didn't work. I still get missing file errors when I load an old saved scene even though the needed files are in the DIM content library folder. I appreciate the help though, guess I will have to just copy over the DIM library to the my documents DAZ library.

If i was to unistall all of the DIM content, is there a way to have it install in the DS default location instead of the public users folder?

If scenes aren't loadign with the paths mapped then I would suspect there may be an issue with the way the old directories were set up (for example nested content directories).

As far as DS goes, it doesn't care where the content is as long as it is in the correct relative location within a known content directory, though you can edit the install directory/ies used by DIM by going to the gear icon to open settinmgs, then adding a new folder or folders in the Installation tab by clicking the + button.
