Are some props immune to the geometry editor? - No, just one of my mistakes

I sometimes use the geometry editor to create new surfaces when I want to fine tune parts of a scene. I am trying to do this now but there is a prop in my scene that just won't respond to the geometry editor. The prop is selected in the scene tab, I can see the polygons in hidden line view but when I click on them with the geomerty editor they don't get selected. I can use the geometry editor on other props in the scene but not this one. I have tried this in the current 4.11 beta and the 4,10 release version of Daz Studio with the same results.
Is there some setting that content creator's can use to make their props non-editable, and if so can I override it? Or is this just some strange bug? Has anyone else had this problem?

If you hide the selected item does that hide the item you are trying to edit? Is it an instance?
Yes, I hid the item to confirm that I had selected the correct one.
The item is not an instance. I have duplicated it but the copy is not an instance, and this is the original one. It is parented to another prop which is parented to another one. I tried unparenting it in case this was the problem but that didn't make any difference.
Sorry, my mistake. I loaded the set I was using into a seperate scene to test it and I found the prop I was working on is actually an instance on another one I couldn't see. I thought it wasn't an instance because when I hid the original prop the instance was hidden as well so I thought I was working on the original. I didn't think that instances were hidden if you hid the original, so I've learnt something new here. And I've also learnt to be more careful when using sets made up of multiple props.
