Help With Emissive Eyes

I am working on a project to make a variety of glowing eyes. I thought it was going well... everything was looking good... until I turned out the lights.
The basic geometry is two solid spheres with a smaller sphere at the center. The center sphere is the emissive "Emitter".
This image shows the figure with the Scene and Dome lights on. The emitter is on but the outer shells are solid and blocking the light. Works fine.
Once I turn the Dome lights off, and just have a mesh light illuminating the figure, it seems like the Emitter sucks the light out of the scene. This image is the same as the first, but with dome light lights turned off.
This image shows the outer shells turned to 0% opacity. You can see the emitter, but it still has the blackout effect.
This last image has the emissive surface applied to the outer shell.
After running many variations, It seems the blackout only occurs when the emissive light passes through another surface, even if that surface is at 0% opacity. And the light vacuum only effects other emissive lights (mesh lights) Spots lights are immune. Has anyone seen anything like this before? I'd really like to get this aspect working.

Have you checked the emissive settings on the outer shell (and everything else)? Iray does allow negative values for emitters so they can act as light "sponges", absorbing light around them. I can't imagine why a product would have that setting turned on though.
Thanks for giving a stab at it. I checked the other layers and all the emissives are turned off (color black). Quite the mystery... but at least it looks ok with Dome and Scene.
Is there a reason you aren't just making the models eyes emissive? I use that quite a bit and have had good results.
