DS 4.6 Instancing question
![jakiblue](https://farnsworth-prod.uc.r.appspot.com/forums/uploads/userpics/069/nDBA4153C9FF3.jpg)
obviously I've been living under a rock, as I've only just noticed mentions of "instancing" in DS 4.6
What is it, how do I use it? Is there a step by step dummy tutorial that'll take me through teh steps?

Greetings,
I recently used it by selecting the item, going to Create | New Node Instance (or plural). It's pretty nice. Don't know what it's effect on resources is, but it was a nice way to quickly duplicate some wooden slats for me.

You can either instantiate a single figure or object, or as I do it, I first create a group containing what I want to instantiate, then create multiple instances of that.
Steps as follows (my way) to create a large group of soldiers.
(1) Set up one soldier
(2) Save him out
(3) Merge that into the scene, make minor adjustments to it to avoid repetitive looks
(4) Repeat step 3 a couple of times so you have 4-6 different looking ones
(5) Now place them as a group
(6) Select them all, do Create->New Group
(7) Now select the group and do Create->Instances.. (and pick a reasonable number).
Here are two examples I've made using that technique.
Excellent use of instancing Totte, I really like your images!
Thanks for posting this, very useful.
Thanks Jimmy!
I tend to do a lot of war images, not instantiating so many flowers or hairpins ;-)
Now if only there was better automation, like the surface replicator in Carrara and other similar functionality. Send In The Clones seems much too simplistic especially considering its price.
Sounds like something for DS 5.0 or a developer opportunity. Send in the clones is great when you want a bunch of characters with different poses and it is powerful, or you need precise control of X/Y/Z movement between instances. (I used it to stack 200 boxes of rum in a warehouse in a handout for an adventure where three out of four playing characters where alcoholics)
Totte - some great work there.
You have managed to make it pretty much not look 3d (i.e. pretty "real") - and that's the greatest compliment any artist can pay another.
Very excited that DAZ can handle instances now. I work mainly in Carrara, but as of today the workflow can be model in Carrara, export a scene out via Collada, instance in Daz then render in Octane. Niiice!
[EDIT] Ah! Except Octane doesn't pick up the instances. Rats. Anyone?
Instances is a 3Delight feature, I haven't tested with neither Luxus nor Reality but I doubt it work.
And Thank You for the compliment.
I really try to render things to look "everyday", I very seldom make it look like a 5 point light pinup photo, just not my cup of tea.

Instances work in Luxus, but as of this writing not in Reality.

Ah OK, thanks for pointing this out. I think I tested it with Reality. Need to give it a Luxus go (as soon as I get a better OpenCL card).
Instances in Octane is also being worked on
