Using Studio in education

Hi all,
Bit of background, I finally managed to gain full time employment at a local art college (after a decade of looking and temp/freelance jobs), I'm looking after four courses - Illustration, Photography, Graphic Communication nee design and Fashion at degree level. Basically I'm looking after the Colleges Macs (as a technician) and helping the students with the Adobe suite of software (as in-class help).

In Fashion I've shown them what can be done with Poser with regards to using V4 to create poses for the students to work with so they have a figure which they can draw around and then impose their creations on top. Seeing as Studio is the cheaper option to Poser the lead lecturer would like to install Studio on four of the studio mac's to see how much it gets used, just wondering what I would need to do to use DS in such an environment.

All help is very much appreciated.
Graham

Depending on how hard the machines are locked-down when it comes to firewalls etc, you might allow DS to talk to the Content Manager Database if that fails.

Otherwise I don't see anything particular you need to do, except maybe configure the DS workspace layouts in a way that suits your needs, and save those out somewhere so meddlesome students won't ruin it all the time.

They're reasonably well locked though I've got admin rights to the machines so I can sort out any issues, I'm now wondering about licensing (multiple licences/serial nos. needed?).
Might have to contact Daz for this part I suspect.

Thanks for the heads up though as I'm a Poser user mainly so the info on DS's CMD and a back up of the DS workspace will come in very handy.

    Congrats with your awesome job!
I've been through artschool myself and still use a lot of knowledge I learned back then :)
Indeed, I see no obstackles for an educational environment as well.
Apart from the computers needing to have enough power and indeed the licence as Totte stated.
I remember from a few weeks back there was another thread about using DAZ in education, although it was with younger kids.
He/she wanted the startup screen altered into a non-skimpwear figure and that was indeed possible.

One thing that springs to mind, is that you might need causion with the nudity.
Not sure what the ages are at your school, but you might want not start a riot by giving the kids accees to too specific bodyparts.
Although our artschools are 18 and above, sometimes we had younger very talented students taken in.
So, if you for example buy a Michael or Victoria 5 or 6 Pro Bundle, you might want keep the genitals uninstalled.
    Also: teenagers ;)

    Just my thoughts :)
Again, congrats and it's an awesome idea to make 3D accessible to these kids!

As far as licensing is concerned you can get a license of DAZ Studio 4.6 Pro for free. In fact, you can get four licenses of DAZ Studio 4.6 Pro for free.

I believe all that you need to do is checkout with DAZ Studio and set the quantity to the number of licenses you need. This should give you the serial codes you need.

As far as getting Studio installed in a network environment, it is possible. I know they had DAZ Studio installed on all of the MACs in the Marriott Library at the University of Utah.

As far as content, if you use DIM it is installed to the public documents folder, so all users have access to it instead of it being installed per user as it used to be.

I hope this answers your question. If you have any others feel free to PM me.

Thanks Estroyer (it's a great job in one of only a few dedicated art colleges in the country, and I have quite a bit of fun and banter with the students, the Fashion lot, almost universally female, I have a good laugh with) and considering what the students get up to (all over 18, most around 20) V4 et al in the buff is relatively mild :D

Thanks for the info Jared it's exactly what I was after (and as it happens the lecturer wanted it installed on four machines :) ). If I have any questions I'll be in touch, thanks again.

Just a wee problem, the limit on ordering DS is 1.

    Hello,
sorry, I'm not understanding your situation ...
But you need multiple serial for your students ... or am I wrong?
if yes then you would be a good exit encourages them to each download the program by themselves, so each of them create an account in daz 3d, and then, each receive a serial on account of them in daz 3d .
since, daz studio is free, everyone can download it individually, and enter the serial on their own ...
But ... I'm afraid I'm confusing your question

Your right, though right now I need only four installs to see if anything comes from it all, one of the lecturing staff is apparently going to give it a go and some of the students (might, they are fashion students after all) download it. I suspect though that they'll only do so once it's been demonstrated to them that can make their lives easier (in a handed to them approach I suspect).

While DAZ comes with a certain amount of content, you will have to make certain any users or students understand the EULA.

I would also submit a ticket to DAZ regarding the question as to whether or not multiple workstations require multiple purchases of content as they are in a non-residential setting.

Or take note of What DAZ_Jared said, because he is the public face of DAZ 3D as far as the forums are concerned.

While one program can be installed on more then one computer, only the serials MIGHT need to be different for each. What would happen if he installed on each of the four computers, the one download, then went on each computer to register, would this not give a separate serial for each computer? or is that strictly tied to the Daz account? From a technical standpoint, he could use the same serial on all the computers, just not sure how that would work with regards to Daz servers, if it would cause a conflict. I have had Daz on three different computers and with just the one serial and had all three running at the same time. This comes in handy if you have a resource problem like I usually do.
