While there was something for the 3Delight era, I'd like a variety of plumes which can be attached to the barrel of any weapon to make it look like a flamethrower. Ideally, with the shape able to be morphed (thin/fat/long/short) and rigged so that it can look like it's shooting straight or being sprayed as the weapon is moving.

That same prop ought to work just as well in Iray. Just use the Uber shader, then the Emissive shader, then put the flame texture in the Emissive surface parameter slot. You might need to play around with the Luminance value to get it to look glowy enough.
Can't say I found it realistic enough.
