Swapping back to a desktop need help with setting up file paths

I went and picked up a desktop with a dedicated video card and such, since my laptop it would seem could no longer handle the load after the last update. Random crashes and etc.  Swapping over would not normally be an issue but this came with two drives, one SSD and one HHD.  I am totally clueless how to set up the D drive as the home and install path for DIM and such on it since it will automatically try and install on the C drive which is the SSD.

Any help would be appreciated.  Last straw was last night when the laptop took 2 hours to get to 2% on an Iray render and then crashed.

In Daz Studio, before installing any content, go to Edit>Preferences>Content tab and click the Content Directory Manager button.

Expand all the levels under the Current Set, highlight each path in turn, and click the Edit button to point it to a location on your D: drive.

Now download http://docs.daz3d.com/doku.php/public/software/dazstudio/4/referenceguide/scripting/api_reference/samples/file_io/install_manager_config/start using the link above the script and drag the file into the DS Viewport, that will set DIM to use the same paths.

You should then be good to install.

You can, if you like, move your profiles directories to D: - go to Users/YOU and right-click on, e.g., Documents, select Properties, go to the location tab, and use the Move button - if you do that before installing aplications they will default to using D: for your documents, pictures etc.

Click the Work Offline box when you start DIM so you can set your Preferences.

Thank you for the help.  I am not sure I followed all of it.  Also I had already installed the base Daz package which means I already have some content installed.  I do have the bulk of my stuff loaded already on an external HHD.  What  I was trying to do was set the diles in D since that drive is completely blank.  I thought I could set up properly if I just went in and changed the C to a D but but DIM wouldn't let me do that .

Your files must actually be in a folder created on your D: drive first. Create a folder there, naming whatever you like - you can use the default DAZ Studio content folder name if you like, or create a new name of your own. Mine is simply called 3DContent, for example. Once you have done that, you can copy (better to copy than move, initially) the contents of your existing content folder that is on your C: drive over to the new folder on your D: drive. Having done that, you can now edit your DIM and DAZ Studio preferences to point to the new content library. I don't use DIM myself, so if there are additional measures necessary, Richard and the others will probably point that out. smiley

And that is what I can't remember is the file structure for the My Daz Library content lol. See the issue has been last time I moved everything over to my external HHD , Smart content stopped recognizing it.  I generally swing between that and Content Library to find things. Especially since it was not all that long ago that vendors started pathing add on content to go the original item  vs a separate file. So Smart content lets me find it easier. Especially after all these years my blasted libraries are so large . I am also using this as a means to clean them up from assorted errors .

The installers ceate the folder structure - all you need it the base directory.

I think I now have the install paths set up correctly. Did forget one thing with DIM lol.  Always check that blasted delete package after installing box.  I admit the SSD definitely speeds up the program but they are so small  I have to watch what I can install.  Since I use Daz the most I did put that there ... just wanted everything else on D.  I am dreading moving the 3rd party content files.  But all good so far. Thanks for all the help everyone.

DS uses relative paths in saved files and in the database (as long as the content was in a content diectory when the file was saved) so moving things should be safe, as long as you go from old content directory to new (not adding or removing any layers of folders within the content directory).

Honestly I need to just install everything to a new external. 1Tb HHDs are just too small and creates too many places for DAz to look for things. Probably need to start with a clean drive and do things properly as far as having things load up. Generally have 4 paths set up for Daz/Poser content for internal and external.  However I has saved alot of my gen 3and 4 differently so was clean some of that up since I have a good bit I still go back and use. I also need to figure out a way to create second clean copies of the genesis figures.  I transferred over quite a few Gen 3 morphs over to 8 and need to clean it up. Why I am kind of relunctant at the moment to just copy the old external because it will overwrite it.

I wasn't arguing against movng, I was saying that for stuff not installed through DIM it is OK to just move the files and folders between the small drive and the alrge one as long as you keep the location within the content directory constant.

Oh no I know you weren't arguing. I was just deciding, now that I know thefile path structures, whether it would better to buy new external vs just using the old one. That way I can correct mistakes I made the first time around with the old one. Using the old one would be plug and play vs a new one which will take a lot of time to set up but would improve preformance as far as program finding things.
