    With Iray - Strand Based Hair is you way to go, for 3Delight, these still are valid.

    I still use displacement fur in iray too, it requires a large seamless noise map of very tiny dots and subdivision in the displacement shader

    it makes a good undercoat for furry animals with strandbased fur too especially if you have to create your own which is not dforce
