Noob question: Change order of surfaces mapped on object?
Hey Folks,
Andrew here. I am a super-newbie to Daz Studio. I've purchased a multi-fold box design online and am trying to map artwork over it. Here's the artwork:
And here's how it's currently mapping on the box object:
The top of the box, which should have the "TOP FLAP" painted on it, has the very corner of "REAR PANEL" peeking out instead. I'm assuming that I need to somehow change the order in which surfaces load the image map, but I can't seem to figure out how to do it. The manual is a little too dense for me to dig through to find this solutiion to this particular problem, so I'm throwing myself upon the mercy of the Forum. Any advice would be appreciated!
Thanks very much,
–Andrew

It looks like the UV mapping doesn't match the image. One or the other will need to be adjusted. You can't do this in Daz Studio as such. If you're a 'newbie' to Daz Studio, that may not mean much. It's simply the system that tells an application how to apply the 2D image to the 3D model.
In DS, in the 3D viewport with your box selected, choose UV View from the camera dropdown. This will show you the UV layout. If you overlay this on top of the image (take a screenshot, swap the white for alpha in an image editor) you will see where they line up and where they don't. If you are not familiar with UV mapping, it is probably going to be easier for you to adjust the image to match the UV layout.
Thanks very much for your reply andya_b341b7c5f5! Is the UV mapping of the object something I could adjust on the model with Hexagon? I did some basic editing of the shape there (resizing to match my final product) but got lost once I started trying to mess with the UV mapping.
The idea of editing the layout of the image had never occurred to me, thanks for the suggestion!

I'm not a Hexagon user, but I believe it has some UV mapping tools. For a box like this, the UV layout should be quite straightforward and even basic tools should suffice. But if you're not familiar with the tools that will mean there is still something of a learning curve to climb. If you are already comfortable with image editing, that may be the line of least resistance.
Yes, hexagon would be a tool to do this.
Great, thanks for confirming, Richard!

Would be easier and quicker to just adjust the writing on the texture. Find the area that is for the top of the box and write what you want on it in GIMP or photoshop, so much easier that a new UV map.
Yeah, after a couple of hours of tinkering in Hexagon, I think I agree with you. I can build an action to automate re-arranging the panels in Photoshop pretty quickly. Just kind of bugs me not knowing something. Maybe I'll pick this up again when I'm not in a time crunch.
Thanks Everybody!
UV mapping is a major pain. It's by far my least favorite part of 3D modeling. And I even have a pretty decent tool for it. (I was never able to get the hang of UV mapping in Hexagon)
I'm actually very relieved to know that; I was getting worried that I was even dumber than I had previously feared.
Took me very little time to figure out how to edit the image to match the map. Major time-saver!
