Genesis generation vs GPU Load?

So, I render scenes with 3-5 main characters, and plenty of props and background items and stuff.  I was wondering, if anyone else finds, even witha good computer, that Genesis 3/8 eat up a lot of resources.

I have 32 GB RAM, and Two 8 GB GTX 1070's.  I render in Iray, and found that the speed of my renders really takes a hit if I add even one Gen 3.  Honestly, I was working with Genesis 1 until I got this compter, then moved up to Genesis 2.  I have used one or two Genesis 3's in a scene, but when doing a series, I find that Gen 3 takes a long, long time; too much to be that practical for my needs.

It's a shame, because they look great.

I'm just wondering if this makes sense, or it means I'm doing something very wrong?  It seems like those specs I mentioend ought to be shooting out renders at high speeds.

It doesn't matter that you have 2 GPUs, it just speeds up your renders, but you can only use 8Gb of VRAM.

Yes, Genesis 8 is heavy by default, but it can be optimized, I've made a tutorial myselft where I go from something like 2,5Gb per one character to 300Mb, showing all the steps and the relative quality:

What's eating up your VRAM isn't the characters but their textures. Loading all those textures into video memory will often cause a render to drop to CPU which is why your renders are slow.

There are lots of ways to mitigate the problem. You can reduce texture sizes with products here at DAZ, you can delete geometry out of view, you can area render and composite or you can get a card/s with bigger VRAM.

All of these options have their own particular issues be it money or skill. Believe me whan I say you are not alone in working out how to get heavy scenes to render in a reasonable time. We practically all are.

Thanks for the replies and the tutorials!  I use the iray optimizer sometimes, but rrely reduce teh textures on main characters that are in the front.
