Any tips or settings to make Interactive mode work better?

When lighting a scene with Iray, I often have to preview it in Iray first. Interactive lets me move characters around while seeing how the lighting affects them. Photoreal I use to preview the final look, but I can't move things around as much because Daz freezes, or is so slow it's not worth the time. This is mostly for my bigger scenes with multiple figures.
In these big scenes, the viewport will preview with "photoreal", but not with "interactive" <- The figures just stay grey and nothing happens.
Is there something I can do to make Interactive work more consistently? Thank you.

Essentially interactive is only good without transparency, it may be good for toons though. Then interactive is much faster than photoreal because it does far less computations. The "grey time" is for preparing the scene for iray and it should only happen when first activating the iray mode. It's odd that it's freezing there.
It may help to give a look at the log to see what happens. I suspect in your case iray is reversing to cpu because the scene doesn't fit the vram. If it's so you may want to get the scene optimizer addon.
As for the default settings they should work fine enough for a mid-range card. If you have a low-end card then it may help to set the max iterations low so your preview stops quickly and doesn't bog the gpu too much.
Thanks for the suggestion on the scene optimizer.
When you mention max iterations, you mean in the render settings? That impacts the preview?
Great information.
