Who turned the lights out?

The best way to understand the problem is to look at the two screen shots that follow.  The first shows how my screen looks while I am trying to set up the scene for a pillow fight in a bedroom.  The bedroom sence itself came equiped with it's own lighting.  But as you can see, everything is almost completely dark.  Obviously, this makes it extremely difficult to pose added figures, etc.  The second screen shot shows what my screen looks like after I render it.  The lighting isn't great, but at least it's visible.  (The second picture was taken before the render was totally complete because it was obvious that the figures were not being properly lit.)

My question is what is causing my screen to black out while the scene is being put together.  More to the point, how do I turn the lights back on?  I tried to set up a new distant light with no effect.

Thanks for you help.

As soon as you add lights to a scene, (main menu, Create->New Point Light…, etc.) the viewport attempts to show how the lighting will look when you render the scene. To see the your darkened scene, you need to turn Preview Lights on. The keystroke shortcut is "Ctrl+L", (CMD+L on a Mac, I think.)

    L'Adair,

THANK YOU SO MUCH.  First for answering my question about turning the Preview Lights on, and second for providing a list of your educational sites.  I know they will be very helpful as I continue my learning experience.

    Thanks again!.

    You're welcome! laugh

(Though the "educational sites" are just threads here on the Daz Forums. I do hope you find some of the information in them useful.)
