Those iRay/CPU/Graphics Card Checkboxes

Current PC setup: Gforce NTX 960 with the latest NVIdia drivers. Processor 4ghz speed, 4 cores. Memory: 32gb memory.
Those checkboxes, the ones under Render/Advanced. I've been trying to read various threads about them and I'm amazed at the hugely variable results people get. Some get big speed boosts with having both checked, some with just either/or. No-one seems to know what that Optix box does or does not do. I tried setting CPU off so I could at least use the computer a little better, but CPU usage goes to 100% and pegs there for as long as the render goes on. This... this situation needs to stop, really. How?

Your scenes are to big for the 960, a scene has to fit in the GPU's VRAM or the render drops to CPU only. The 960 has only 2Gb of VRAM which is incredibly low for iray. Even with things like scene optimizer, a script sold here that reduces texture sizes, it will be very hard to keep a scene on the card.
You best option is getting a newer GTX or RTX card with more VRAM
