Save canvases/node lists?

I am working with rendering in layers using canvases, however since the canvases are linked to render settings, I can't load a new render setting preset without erasing all my canvases and node lists. Is there some way to save these separately from a particular render preset?

I don't see one, and the control-freak trick (hold down cmd/ctrl while double-clicking to get an option dialogue) doesn't seem to do anything with Render Settings presets
