This happens if your shadows are set to deep instead of raytraced on your lightset. It's random, and sometimes only appears on certain attempts. Try changing the render image size, or rotating the camera just A tiny bit. That might help.

Awesome, thanks for the info, I started worring that it was my processor or video card, it's usually not that bad but the picture I was working on was covered with them I'll have to try moving the camera when I get back home

This happens to me quite a bit because I prefer medium-high quality renders @ 1-2 minute render times over high-high+ quality renders @ 10+ minutes. Like others have said, this seems to be a random occurrence with deep shadow maps, and the more you have the more often you'll see it. I find the best way to handle this (if you almost always get the artifacts in your render) is to render and save it off twice. The artifacts very rarely appear in the same place twice. Go to your favorite image editor and put them on separate layers and delete the artifacts on the top one, then merge the layers. Voila.

    Hope that helps.

I've only ever seen this twice, there were only a few (1-2) and it was in a scene with water before I found render settings I was happy with - of course I like what might be stupidly high quality renders that take anywhere from 50 minutes to a couple hours (even had some take 48 hours lol).
