To render using Iray does my viewport also have to be set to Iray or can I have it set to textired shaded and be able to render in Iray?

Yes. I almost never use Iray viewport, and then only in the aux viewport. It takes way too long to see pose changes and the like.

Your viewport can be whatever setting you want and it won't affect the actual render. I usually use textured view, but i also use the interactive Iray preview to setup lights and check other things that will only show once rendered.
