Exporting animation keyframes only in FBX (DS4.6 or Carrara) to Unity

Hi All,
I'm attempting to export custom keyframe animations in FBX from either DS4.6 or Carrara Pro 8.5 (I have both), but so far, I haven't been able to get Unity to recognize the FBX file as just an animation. It thinks the file is a model, even though I've only checked the Animations checkbox when I do the export.
Is there a way to export just the keyframes in FBX and have them recognized by Unity? Unity's Mecanim system doesn't accept BVH files, and I want to be able to export the animations one-by-one from DS/Carrara, rather than trying to smoosh them altogether with the model in one export.
Any advice or links to tutorials would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!
