dForce confusion

Hi all,

My name is Joe and I've been frustrated by how simulate works. I bought a complete, Wise Wizard HD Bundle and been unable to get simulate to work. I had originally did a simulate to a simple pose to try and get all the layers of clothing to fall right on the figure. After that I did a pose on the right hand so I could put the staff in it. When I did that the staff went thru the outer cloak twice and the outer tunic twice so I thought that doing another simulate would get the clothes wrapping nicely over the staff. Simulate went back to the original positioning and the staff was still sticking thru multiple layers of clothing and when it go to the pose I wnated the whole scene was a terrible mess. All the clothes looked like they had been blown into the air around the torso. I think what may have happened is the GIGANTIC dragon on the top of the staff grabbed part of the clothing an stretched it and then tore it. Evidently I missing some big steps that need to be taken when I try to do a simulate. My first simulate worked great because I followed the tutorial but what the heck did I do wrong on the second. What am I  missing??

Many Thanks,

Joe B

If you want the staff to interact with the clothing you need to make sure it isn't passing through the clothing (or the human) at the outset or during the simulation - you may need to use a Timeline simulation, setting some intermediate poses to steer it out of trouble. Alternatively you can select the staff and just turn Visible In Simulation off in the parameters pane.

    To add to Richard's advice...

If a dForce simulation starts with two objects intersecting (e.g. the staff passes through the cloak at the beginning), dForce thinks you intended for that to happen and doesn't know how to resolve the collision. That's what causes the clothes to twist wildly since it's trying to reconcile the clothes moving, but also being held in place by the staff.

In additoin to using a timeline animation like Richard suggested, you can also take advantage of the "Start from memorized pose" option.

    1. Put the staff in the wizard's hand and pose him in the final pose you want him to have in your scene.
    2. Save the Pose Preset ( see the DS Manual page on Posing for an explanation on how to do that)
    3. Move the wizard's arm out and twist as necessary to get the staff away from the clothing
    4. "Memorize" this pose using Edit menu > Figure > Memorize > Pose
    5. Re-load the Pose Preset you saved in step 2

Now, when you simulate and you use "Start from memorized pose", it will use the pose with the wizard's arm extended away instead of the default Genesis 8 Male pose like normal. This may be enough to get what you want without having to learn the basics of animation to achieve this effect. :)

  • I don't know when you replyed to this JonnyRay but thank you, that has opened up a whole new world with posing and creating the look I wanted. going from the t-pose was so frustrating.
