carrara running on a threadripper?

wondering how much of a performance boost would be over an 8 core?

i need a dedicated online pc for gaming.

can' t decide if i should get a cheap i5, or replace the 8 core with a thread ripper and game on the 8.
threadripper will take an extra couple months to get.  but is it worth it?  cores don't seem to speed up light calculations

doh, the indecisions.

the waiting is the hardest part

The few single core parts of Carrara wont speed up much, but the multicore will be really fast. Also note that AMD just launched the new Zen2 Ryzen 9 3950x 16 core for 749$ that will beat or match the Intel 18 core i9 9980XE at 2000$. The new Zen2 Threadrippers are due for 19Q3 launch, maybe up to 64 core then... The CPU wars are really bringing lots of cores per dollar.

clockspeed is the single most important factor

otherwise something like Octane render and a decent video card

Well, since decent Nvidia cards have indecent prices, like 800$ for RTX 2080 and then another 600$ for Octane, I would go for a decent PC rig and a smaller GPU. Octane is too pricey...

Oh yeah, the RTX cards offer real time ray tracing in some limited form, but not available yet in any 3D app.

thanks.  I'm not doing octane or vray, or iray.

i need ultimate speed for rendering frames.

not sure another 8 cores will be worth the $$ impact.
the game i want to play recommends geforce 750, is in my price range.

some things don't need a fresh radiance map for every frame.

like close ups on facial animation. one radiance map for blinks or kisses saves on render time.
my rule of thumb is if it doesn't need to cast a new shadow, render with same map.

Well, a refreshed RTX 2060 is rumored to be released soon at 250$. Still brings some real time raytracing at a cost that some can afford.

Prolly needs high powered power supply.

The cases they put the threadripper in are bedazzlers. Chandeliers of cases Just want plain desktop.

Nah, if you go for the best air cooler, the CPU will top out at 300W. The GTX 2060 class is below 200W, so still a normal PSU. There are micro-ATX mainboard for threadripper. The best air cooler so far: http://thermalright.com/product/silver-arrow-tr4/ Supports 3 fans and can be run silent or loud.

I would love to hear someone's experience using a Threadripper with Carrara.

To me, the best plan is to go to a local computer repair place that you trust.  Ask them how much they would charge you to assemble a machine (you buy the parts and they assemble it).  My local guy charges $90 to assemble your computer.  He also advises me on the best parts to buy, based on my needs.  I then shop around and find the best prices on those parts.  If you want a bare-bones case, then that is what you choose and pay for.

Well, the closest would be a thread from a few months ago, where someone was running a few old workstations from Ebay on more than 60 threads.

Threadrippers are low volume HEDT, High End DeskTop PCs which both for tech and cost is too difficult for barebone. Anyways, if you are in the USA, Micro center always has a package deal with mainboard and some sale and can build your PC as you want it; https://www.microcenter.com/product/510650/ryzen-threadripper-2990wx-30-ghz-32-core-str4-boxed-processor https://www.microcenter.com/site/service/instore-service-complete-build.aspx I would wait for Threadripper2 coming soon. Even the 16 core Ryzen 9 3950x is a good deal for 750$, coming September.
