Creating HDRI Images

So let's say I have a panorama. How do I go about converting this to an HDRI? Simply using the image alone... works, if I fiddle a bit with the exposure and add a mesh light to represent the sun. But it's not working "right". Is there by chance a reasonably simple way to make this happen?

I'm not sure how good an HDRI you can get with a single image panorama, but here's a tutorial showing how to fake it. HDR Looking Effect With Only 1 Photo. The author is using Photoshop CS5.
