scaling opacity with distance?

Hello, relative noob here, my apologies if this has been asked and answered before.

I noticed on one of my renders that the plane I was using as the ground faded to zero opacity as it got further from the camera (see image below) without me deliberately choosing to do that. It turned out to be useful in that instance, enabling me to blend in a different background by putting a cloud animation in between the two, making it look like there was a dust storm just behind the fence.

My question is: is there a specific setting for determining when this happens and from how far away?

It'd be really useful for another scene, where I want to set up the renders with the objects near the camera full opacity and the ones further away steadily lower opacity with distance, and I can adjust that distance-opacity parameter to be relatively short.

I need to do this so that when I overlay these renders on top of a cloud animation, it will look like the objects further away are further inside the cloud. Is this possible?

Oops, I should have specified that this is in Daz Studio, and I should have posted it in Daz Studio discussions. Could an admin or forum moderator please move it?

To me it looks like the ground fading to zero opacity on your rendering above is not opacity but just the light falling off.

But it was lit purely by by the hdri environment, that shouldn't fall off, and it does turn transparent rather than fading to a colour. Is there no setting for rendering only up to a certain distance in daz studio? I know there is one in blender.
