Sudden slowdown for no reason

I've installed 4.6 after getting brutal slowdown on 4.5 for no reason with just a few models on screen but it's still randomly changing from being buttery-smooth to being unworkable.

My PC resources are fine, plenty of RAM available etc. Why is it randomly slowing down?

What video card do you have, and what are your setting in the Interface tab of Edit>Preferences?

Hi, yea I had a short mess around in the preferences before but ti didn't make any difference. I turned the display and textures to 'low'. Currently it's:

    per pixel shading - off
    hardware aa- on
    display optimisation - best
    backface lighting - on
    texture resoruces - quality
    multi threading - on

    Graphics card - GTX590 (still a beast).

Last hour or so it's been smooth running but that's the thing - it could start chugging at any moment. I don't think Fraps is the cause of it. I remember turning it off and saw no difference.

Certainly nothing wrong that I can see in your settings, and your card should be thoroughly capable. Though I have to say the latest nVidia drivers, which I installed because of the recently announced security hole in the older ones, have been very unstable - I've had two system freezes and multiple driver shut down and restarts over the last few days.

I guess it could be the driver. Battlefield 4 is unplayable for me.

It's smooth now but yesterday and earlier was a nightmare and I expect it to stutter if I change the scenes again. It might be one of those memory leak scenarios and my old 6GB of RAM is starting to give out, or something.

What is your video driver version? I am using 331.82 - and just reinstalled as it (or something) twice stopped my system from suspending cleanly, after causing all sorts of stuttering and visual anomalies. Too soon to say if that has helped, but looking at the support forums it dose appear this has been a long running issue though there was a suggestion it was mainly with Fermi cards.

Same driver - 331.82. Experiencing CPU spikes on Battlefield 4 throwing the framerates all over the place.

I spent most of yesterday on DAZ and 90% of the time it was surprisingly smooth. Still has random moments of unexplained slowdown but a lot better than before.
