What is the "opacity color"?

I got a character turning greenish transparent, and I wondered why. After experimenting, it was because I had picked a red tone for the "opacity color". After changing it back to white, the issue was solved.

I have no clue what the "opacity color" is, however, and googling only led me to comments about the opacity slider. So, what is this channel used for?

That sounds like a 3delight shader. Opacity is handled channel-by-channel - the higher the colour value (red, green, or blue) the more opaque the surface is to that colour., but underneath it's a colour So pure red would block all red, but allow blue and green to come through fully. Many shaders just show a value for opacity, which adjusts each colour equally, but underneath it's actually a colour (grey of varying value).
