Animating Ship's Exhaust

Hi,
I have a scene (animated) where a ship takes off - and I was wondering how people have animated the exhaust?
I need it to have a slight hiccup during the take-off.
Is this possible?

    With DS you may be able to use Nerd3D's smoke and flames too, or if it is Carrara I think the particle system may help.

    Thanks for the reply but the reason I posted in the Bryce Forum is because this is for Bryce.
