DS Takes 7 minutes to load a scene

I am really surprised at how long it takes to load a new scene, I have a 3.5 KB scene file and it takes 7.5 minutes to load the sucker.  Yes I timed it while I already had a scene loaded so the program had to clear the old scene first but geez that is a long time!

Does that for me sometimes depending on what’s in the scene and scene before, others load fast, I have no idea except it must be storing temp files somewhere for undo maybe.

Yeah that's a long time. What about clearing the scene first, or from a fresh start up? Just to take that out of the equation.

If I clear the scene first then I have to add the time it takes to accomplish that.  So I still end up with a long load time.  I produce comics here and when I have 70 or 80 to 100 panels to work on this time factor is a big deal.

Note that the scene file size is not related to how much there is in the scene when loaded. There's a lot that isn't included in the scene files — texture files, object mesh files, morph data and more; all these are stored as separate files. The only thing you'll always find in the scene file are parameter settings for all the scene objects, and the file can be compressed, which shrinks it even more.

There does seem to be something off about those times, though; I used to have longish load times, but that was several program versions and a good few years ago. Just how big and complicated is the scene you're trying to load? That does affect load times, but I've not seen even complex scenes take as long as a minute to load, usually a lot less.

Have you updated to the new D|S4.11 that came out recently? Some people have reported Weird Stuff™ happening in comparison to the previous version 4.10.

I am running 4.11 and in this scene there are 3 genesis 2 characters, 1 genesis 8 female, and 1 genesis 3 male.  The set has been converted to IRAY textures and I have reduced the texture size of he scene to a medium resolution.  There are 4 emissive light and I am using an IRAY light prope to light the areas that are in shadow.  Knowing that the scene file has a lot of pointers in it to various chaachters and textures would make the file smaller.

For me, it's not so much the load time, it's the clearing scene and deleting objects that takes much longer, especially after removing figures with lots of possible morphs, like any Genesis 3 figure (hundreds of possible characters and shaping morphs). Could take more than 15 minutes if I add and delete more than one, and change hair, outifts, textures...  Better to restart Studio in that case, but I forget, then wait, wait, almost there, wait, now, no, wait... click, click, BOOM!

Mixing generations doesn't help to make things faster. Also HD characters are more resource intensive and need a high subdivision to get rendered properly so you may avoid them when possible. Then the smoothing operation is also cpu intensive and I fear it is not multithreaded either. Avoid it if not strictly necessary, or bake the smoothing into a morph.

  • My scenes are not simple scenes as I try to create real life so sometimes I have 3 or 4 real characters along with 3 or 4 billboards and a complex set.  All my scenes are like this.

Weird. Does this happen only on one particular scene? I'm wondering if maybe it's corrupted or something. I've had issues long ago when there's a messed up object in the scene and it causes problems until I delete it. Maybe try deleting some stuff then save and try to reload. At least that might pinpoint the problem.

Also, have you ruled out a bad hard drive?
