Is there an established thread for the identification of items used in gallery and store renders?

I hope I'm not duplicating a thread, I just blanked on how to search for a relevant topic. From time to time, I see something in a gallery or product graphic that I don't recognize and want to know more about, but the artist or PA did not identify additional items used in the image. In a gallery image, I would probably just drop the question in a comment, but in the store... well, I can understand that a PA is not going to be thrilled by people asking about anything besides the featured product, but I'm sure I'm not the only one who has gone, "Hey, I've been looking for hair just like that! What is it?"

What do you do when that happens to you? Do PA's sometimes encourage other PA's work by featuring it in their own promo art? Is it cool to ask, and is it best to send a private message, or is it okay to start a thread like this identifying the item in question and where it was seen used? I apologize if this is covered in the FAQ; it seems like a question that would come up often enough to be in there somewhere, but I turn into a zombie after reading a dozen entries and wander off in search of brains.

Of course, if someone says "Yeah, it's in there" I'll tough it out, but I wanted to get the question out there before I went to bed and forgot about it.

It's not unusual to wonder what's been used- just ask on the forums is a fast way to get an answer. Many people jump in to help and know products from other sites too :)

THere have been several attempts to start just such a tread, but they always die and slip out of sight.

Well, I guess I'll just throw the questions out in the thread whenever they come to me. Thanks!

The image that got me wondering this time was the promo art for Xena's new casual outfit for G2 Males: http://www.daz3d.com/snowball-of-savings/wicked-le-relaxed. The hair used does not seem to be a G2M specific product (the easiest thing to check first) so I was curious what it was, and (more a question for Xena directly) is it a customized version of something I have seen before and just wouldn't recognize from those pictures. Xena did a great job of making that hair look good, and I'd love to try it out.

All input is welcome! Thanks again!

Are you sure it's not this one: http://www.daz3d.com/short/zior-hair

Otherwise I would guess Pure Hair Rock 'n Roll: http://www.daz3d.com/short/pure-hair-rock-n-roll

Hmmm. Zior hair has a part on the (character's) right side, and stands up a lot. Well, the both do, in the promo art, but Pure Hair: Rock'n'Roll has the right hairline, and the grouping is closer. In the promo art, Rock'n'Roll has this sort of Cockatoo thing going on, while Xena's promo art shows hair that looks tame and mature in comparison. I'd have to get into the shaping or parameters to see if it's designed to lay down a bit. It's pretty close, (going by the 4th pic) and could have custom mats and morphs to look the way it does in Xena's promo art.

Thanks! I've seen both in the store and have them on my wishlist, but neither clicked. This is one of those cases where seeing what someone else has done with an item is what convinces me that I should buy it.

Yes, PA's definitely encourage other's work by featuring it in promos, especially if they are friends or have a working relationship. Is it cool to ask the PA's what they used in promos? That is really up to the PA. I am delighted to answer the question anytime by PM. Others are too busy. Not that they don't want to help, they simply don't have the time. I've actually gotten a few requests for what items I have used in promo renders from the help desk/customer service. I would much rather be asked directly than to have the customer service people have to follow up on stuff like that when they have so many other things to do.

The very quickest/easiest way though is to start a new thread in the commons. Then you get to pool from the hundreds of people that may be logged in at any given time who may recognize the item. Besides, some of us regard it as a treasure hunt, and on more than one occasion I have bought the item a person was looking for info on because it was brought to my attention in a way I hadn't noticed previously.

    Hope that helps.
    Cheers!

Definitely helpful! Thanks for your insight and advice! Having basically done what everyone's suggesting, and seeing it work in action, it's obviously good advice!

    Thanks everyone!
