Renaming Items - Content Management

To better organize my content, I would like to be able to rename them. Changing the file names does -not- work.

You can edit names in the Content Library pane, under Daz Studio Formats etc. Be aware that renaming files is a risky operation, you certainly want to make sure you have your database backed up at least so that the Content Management System is aware of the names.
Back in the day, I used to rename (and even move) things in my library all the time. However since the implementation of CMS (and especially DIM) it has become more problematic. Even if you say rename "PrPistolR" to "Pistol - Pirate - Right" and CMS still recognizes it and it shows in Smart Content, if that package is ever updated and DIM downloads the update, you're liable to end up with both "PrPistolR" and "Pistol - Pirate - Right" in your folder and content again.
If you have a lot of content and finding it is a pain, I would suggest that creating your own Categories and browsing those is better than renaming files. At least those will survive (most) DIM updates.
If you install content purchased from DAZ via DAZ Connect, which doesn't populate your DAZ Studio Format library, you can populate your DAZ Studio Format Library with product file shortcuts. These shortcuts can be renamed, as the shortcut contains pointers to the original file name and location.
These shortcuts are created by dragging icons from the Smart Content Tab info FOLDERS (that you create) in your DAZ Studio Format library. You are not limited to DAZ Studio format files; which allows you to create shortcuts of Poser format products into your DAZ Studio Format Library.
Since the DAZ Studio Format library is populated with shortcuts, any updates via DAZ Connect are reflected automatically, with the exception updates to the file folder structure. File folder structure updates will break the shortcuts as the files are not longer where they were originally when the shortcuts were created. File reorganization updates don't happen frequently, but enough that after a product is updated in DAZ Connect, I'll check the product in the DAZ Studio Format library for icons with ?? and update the shortcuts when needed.
I switch to this method of populating the DAZ Studio Format library for three primary reasons.
1. Control the placement of products.
2. Shortcuts can be rearranged using the computer's operating system without breaking metadata and
3. DAZ Connect updates only downloads changed files.
