Genesis 2, 3, and 8. Whats are the differences?

What are the differences between the genesis'...genesi?...genesees? whell I've seen 2, 3, and then for some reason it skips 4-7 and goes straight to 8. is there any difference? are certain ones better at things than others? What are the pros and cons?

The history and progression are pretty well covered in the Daz 3D Human Figures History thread here. If there's something unclear, maybe best to use that thread to add to the knowledge. :)

    Outside of what JohnnyRay said....

If you want Iray support out of the box, I'd recommend using G3 or G8. Also, those are the generations that currently still have items developed for & sold in the DAZ store.

Also, poses & clothing & skins & characters might need adaption between geerations that can lead to loss of functionality or is straight impossible (like, using HD morphs between generations).

If you are fine with conversions and tinkering, you can get a lot of value out of any generation.

Oh, and the most important aspect is financial - if you are new, you usually buy a lot of content. It's usually best to focus on one generation for starters.

Take everything I say with a grain of salt, because I'm by no means an expert on these things. But aside from IRAY materials - not all G2 figures have it - I think the main difference is in the way the figures can be posed. I think there was some improvement there from G2 to G3.

From G3 to G8 I think it's mostly improvements regarding facial expressions, as well as increased backwards compatibility. G8 figures can use autofit to wear anything made for the previous 3 generations, and for either gender. Previous to G8 the autofit feature was more limited.

Also worth noting is that the Genesis 8 figures use the same UV maps as the Genesis 3 figures. This means that skins designed for Genesis 3 Male/Female will also work for Genesis 8 Male/Female. The body morphs don't translate, but the skin textures do.

As MOST of the G3 figures. There were a few G3 figures (Olympia 7 being one, as I recall) that had custom UVs, and thus weren’t interchangeable with the rest of the G3 world (or G8).  Hopefully Daz has put that in our rear view mirror...
