[dForce: When I drape over an object with hard edges (like a cube), the corners spawn 'spikes'] Is there a setting I can fiddle with to prevent spikes from forming on edges?
The resolution of the msh may be a factor, as may the way in which the faces get split into triangles (which can be cotnrolled through the Geometry Editor). A picture may help to see what is happening.
