Poser Runtime Organization - The way I do it :)

I have seen so many posts about Poser Runtime Organization.

As long as you put Geometries in Geometries and Textures in Textures, you are ok to put everything under Characters in your library.

I use both Poser 11 and Poser Pro 2014.

In the prior versions, I got so confused with my outfits being one place and my mat files for those being another.  So, I just started playing with the files.  I could always put it back :)

I put everything in "Characters."

I even put "Material" folders under Characters.

However, if you have shaders that you might was to use on another object in the material room, just put a copy in the Materials folder.

If you want to apply a Material in the Pose room of Poser, do it!!  Say, you are changing shaders of a blouse.  Poser will pop up and ask if you want to shade the blouse, or the collar, or the trim....if the material zones were made that way by the creator.

Hair, that should go in "Hair" can be put in the Character folder as well...sometimes.  I think I had a problem one time.

So, this is what my V4 runtime looks (In the pics attached.)

Oh, yes, sometimes, if I am in a hurry, I just plop the entire content file in my Character directory and put a copy of the Geometries and and copy of the Textures in the proper place.

The most important part of your organization is keeping an Excel Spreadsheet!!

Column Titles:

Vendor

Product

Misc notes column

Location of Orginal File - on your hard drive

Location of the installed file - on your hard drive (within your runtime)

If you have questions, let me know.  If this post is moved...sorry about that :)

it was wonderful when they made it so can move the texture addons to the character folder.

    and the hairs.

and i put a copy of the promo pic with a 0kb .pz2 or cr2 file, so i can see what hair and outfit it is. for outfits and critters, i replaced the original thumbnail with actual renders of it.  too much time lol

the original poser put conforming clothes in the props folder.
was confusing to remember what was rigged.

i tempted sometimes to redo my duf content library.
if i started all again, would put all the hairs in a separate runtime.

i started installing the duf versions of th old legacy pc content, til i realized there were no subfolders for that old content
it all went to the root of data folder. what a mess.  discovered a new ocd over it lol

and with the clones available, it makes no sense to subdivide hair and clothes by figure. since they can share it.

My dream was to have my actual render for thumbnails, too!!  I bet you were pulling your hair out!!

Oh, yes...Hair...funny you should mention that!!  I purchased too many for Poser!

I am very OCD about this stuff....to my dismay...LOL

I had read about Poser starting with comforming clothing being in Props...WOW...more confusing.

I wondered about the old legacy files and Daz Studio 4.10 (not brave enought to upgrade yet.)  Can I use DS legacy files in DS 4.10?  I haven't tried or googled it.

The thing is, we all have to put things where we can remember it.

I believe windows 7 on has filesystem links (soft links as they are known in Unix systems).

links can be used to gather files and folders in your runtime into a coherent organisation without moving files where (for example, the Daz content db or DIM might no longer be able to find them).

Using this, you can group clothes into a dedicated folder under Figures/Character or Smartprops in Props or separate actual Poses from morph and material poses in Pose.

  • Sharing an existing runtime library between DAZ Studio 4.10 and Poser 11 Pro is my goal. I know it is possible, as I did have that with DAZ Studio 4.0 and Poser 10 up until my Laptop crashed. With that laptop also went the tutorial I had saved that gives directions on how to do it. I'll certainly appreciate any info that provides good instructions concerning this.

    Cheers!

I've recently started reorganising my Poser runtime to have items with the characters they are for. I found face files didn't like being moved though. When you say Hairs are you talking about hr2 files?

I do something similar withing Daz studio. I use categories and I have a main category for hairs and then I organise them into long, short, updos and pony tails and unusual hairs for items like kelp hair.

But by using categories I can also have them with the character they were originally meant for as well.
