Installing Daz3d on a new machine

Hi there.  I tried to install Daz3d on a new machine.  The latest version.  Before I installed it, I went ot the install manager and changed all the folders where I wanted Daz3d content to go (a separate hard drive). I figured I had done all that.  But it still recommended that I put everything in C:/Users/Jeff/AppData/Roaming/DAZ 3D/cms.  I changed that and hit accept.  I installed Daz3d.  When I go back to the install manager, I see that it reverted back to the C driver and the users directory.  It does not give me the option to change this directory.  I don't want the Daz3d content on the c drive.  I tried uninstalling Daz3d.  It still doesn't allow me to change this directly

I clicked on the part where it says "control click on this button and change directory.  It's greyed out.

So, how can I get this to work so that all my files and my content go in a separate directory other than the C drive?

There are several folders that can be configured. The one you mention is for the CMS database, which is not where your files and content will be going, just the metadata. Installing DAZ Studio shouldn't affect the others (Library(ies),Package Archive, Thumbnail Archive, Manifest Archive), but it might force the CMS database location back to the default. Someone recently had trouble with that, and it was suggested to change the location from DAZ Studio Preferences first (F2). You have installed the PostgreSQL CMS?

  • Thanks North.  So far, I just the install manager "manage" the installation.  It seems to have installed everything.  However, I uninstalled everything with the install manager, and I may uninstall the uninstall manager as well to see if that allows me to change it from the beginning.  I remember in previous installations of Daz3d, there is a place in there where you can change the location of the libraries and models.  However, that doesn't mean that the install manager with see if and install all my materials and models in the right place.  But thanks for the info, I'll follow up on that.

Earlier versions of DIM only allowed you to directly change the location of the Library, or add more than one. DAZ Studio allowed you to include those libraries, but is not interested in the location of the Package Archive, Thumbnail Archive or Manifest Archive. Those are only of interest to DIM, and can now easily be changed. Typically, you would install DIM first, then configure your folders before installing anything else. That way, everything goes where you want from the start. Not sure about the CMS location, I never played with that.

  • Someone smarter than me will probably give more detailed instructions, bu tI seem to recall that when I went through this, nad ran into difficulties, the tech support advice (and it solved my issues) was not to mess with the C:/Users/Jeff/AppData/Roaming/DAZ 3D/cms install path. I'm not at that computer to look up the back and forth, bu tI believe it has to do with the path being needed by Windows as well as cms? don't quote me on that, but when I used that default location all the little issues I was having were solved. OTerhwise I would agree with Northof45; install DIM first, configure your folders (keep cms as default location) and it should go where you want.

  • I made a mistake.  i copied the wrong link to indicate above.  All I wanted was to have the install manager to install My DAZ Library in a different drive.  That link up there was right above the link I couldn't copy and I thought it was the same.  I apologize. So, that's all I'm trying to do have the figures and props be installed in a different directory than the C drive.  That's what the Install Manager is not allowing me ot do.  And since this whole install is being driven by the "install manager" it's oging to install all those materials in a place that's not going to help.

  • So, I went back to the system and I got what I wanted to happen by sheer dumb luck, of poking around and hoping and wishing.  In frustration I had uninstalled eveyrthing last night, DAZ3d and all the accompanying software.  I went back today and started looking around at how to change the MY DAZ Library folder so it would be something other than the default.  The following happened by accident, but hopefully it will help someone else.

You click on the gear and go to installation.  It will show you other folders and most important, the recommended location for the contents, which is greyed out.

At the bottom there is a plus button.  I clicked it saying "Gee, I wonder what this does."  It allows you to create another folder and to give a name.  I did that.

Going back to the standard content directory, I clicked on details and managed to get an option to change the recommended directory, cause I had created a new one.  I did that.

When I re-installed everything, the content went to the external directory that I chose.

When it installed the rest of the content, it went to the external directory as well.

It shouldn't have to be this hard.  In any event, I thank you both for trying to help and I apologize that I listed the wrong directory.  Once eveyrthing is finished installing, I'll let you know if everything even works... :)

Ah, yes, new Library and path. Sorry, sometimes the obvious is easy to miss. You shouldn't have any trouble now.

  • Well, the installation worked and DAZ studio works.  Thank you all for helping and hopefully those instructions may help someone someday.
