4.12 GTX+RTX

So, I gather from the forums that the new 4.12 beta has a version if iRay that takes advantage of the RTX features of the latest NVidia cards.

Question: Has anybody experimented with what happens if you have both a GTX and an RTX card simultaneously used to render? I’m curious if you still get RTX support out of the RTX card, or if that gets disabled if both cards don’t have it.

You should take a look at these two benchmarking threads:

    https://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/341041/daz-studio-iray-rendering-hardware-benchmarking/p1

    https://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/344451/rtx-benchmark-thread-show-me-the-power/p1

The second of these is intended to see how much difference the RTX cores make.  I did some testing for these threads yeaterday, but I didn't run both cards together for the RTX cores test, and your question got me curious, so I ran a few tests with the benchmark from the second benchmark above.  Here's the results:

                                    DS 4.11.033                    DS 4.12.047

    1080Ti                     2 min 18 sec                  2 min 8 sec

    2080Ti                    1 min 22 sec                   34.5 sec

    1080Ti+2080Ti       55.5 sec                         30.3 sec

I know that this is only one benchmark, on one computer, so more evidence is needed but it looks to me as though the RTX cores are still being used in 4.12.047 when there is a GTX card present.  It is also interesting to see that even with the GTX card, 4.12.047 renders the scene 10 seconds faster.

I have a 2080ti and a 1070ti and can confirm a notable speed boost from 4.11 to 4.12. I haven't benchmarked anything, but things are definately zippier.

I'm at work and don't have ready access to my data but my 2070 is definitely faster in 4.12 than in 4.11 and I use it with a 1080ti.

Thanks for the info. Based on @Dim Reaper’s stats, it’s clear that the presence of the GTX card doesn’t seem to hinder the performance of the RTX card, which is what I was wondering. (I have 2 GTX1080’s, but was considering upgrading one of them, and was wondering if the presence of the GTX would cripple the RTX.)

the 4.11 to 4.12 speed improvement was pretty well documented - I just hadn’t seen (or missed) the GTX+RTX combo info.

So, from the above tests I would assume that 4.12 does not improve the render times of GTX 10 series GPUs? Or the improvement is very slight. That's a shame, I was hoping for better after reading through the 4.12 Beta thread.

    I have a 980ti; I'm seeing a decent speed improvement, about 25 to 35% is what I'd estimate.

My results suggest that the RTX functionality specifically isn't responsible to the improvement.
