Applying a tattoo across seams

I started with an idea of having a side-of-the-head tattoo thinking that it wouldn't be that bad to apply just using Photoshop. Boy was I wrong.
The trouble basically just comes from the warping of the side of the head on the face texture. You can see what I tried to do attached, but as stubborn as I am, it's just not worth it to keep trying that way.
I know there are projection painting application that can be bought, but I honestly can't afford those. I'm somewhat competent with Blender, but basically my question is: how should I go about trying this next? (And if with Blender, could you link a tutorial please?! I've looked, but none that I found quite cover something like this.)

It might work, if you are rendering in Iray, to use an Iray Decal Node (from the Create menu) to project inside DS.
