Pinning Best Practice?

Put simply, my question is basically... what's the best method to adjust a limb, without impacting the rest of the figure? I'm running into a situation often where I simply want to adjust the arm position for a character. Logically, I know that I want to essentially pin the rest of the character, above the joint that I'm going to adjust, but I'm not sure the quickest path to essentially "freeze" everything below that joint... I'm just not sure the best way to do it

I'm not an expert on pinning, but I believe it depends on what bones interact with the bone you pin. If you want to move the hand up, but not affect the body, I believe you can pin the collar bone for that side, and dragging the hand will then only affect the hand, forearm and shoulder bones. Not sure if it will affect the fingers, though. Pinning the abdomen and then dragging the hand would allow most of the upper body to move. Whether or not it moved and how much would be dependent on how much you move the hand.

    I hope this helps some.
