graphics card too weak?

I have a few questions, and I would appreciate it a lot if someone could give me a good answer:

1/ Studio's viewport is extremely sluggish. I can't even turn a loaded character around because after some four small rotates it already blocks. The problem is probably my outdated graphics card, a Geforce GTX 770 4GB. As I am on a budget - I still run Windows 7 Pro 64 - I can't purchase nor install the latest and the greatest. So the best I could find is a GeForce GTX 1050 Ti 4GB. This would also solve my problem with not being able to run Adobe Sensei.
But before I purchase it: will this be a real step ahead? Will Daz Studio run more smoothly on this card?
Or is there another reason, or perhaps a workaround?

2/ As I have been out of Daz for many years - since 2015 -  I wonder whether there is some possibility to re-use character content like skins, poses ... from, say Mil3 to Mil 8 ? What would you recommend?

thanks for reading and answering.

Are you rendering Iray or 3DL?

For Iray, you'll be bound by the 4GB limitation, which means that if your scene is larger than the free memory of your card, it will bounce back to CPU Rendering = much slower. As both cards have the same size limitation, it's not per se an improvement. There are probably speed improvements when the scene fits on the card, though.

    Mil3 - are you taking Generation 3 (Viky3/Mike3) or Genesis 3?

Generation 3 to Genesis 8 is pretty complicated; I don't know if it's possible at all.

Genesis 3 to Genesis 8 has a lot of transfer products in the store, but you can also transfer a lot of content using autofit, directly. You might find this thread interesting: https://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/64403/converting-to-g1-g2-g3-g8#latest

  • Thanks both for taking the time to reply. Display Optimisation set to Best did the trick and I can now rotate, zoom and move a textured Genesis 8 figure.

As I prefer to use the latest Genesis 8 base model, I will visit that thread, but at the moment, after some five years of absence due to personal problems, I restart at zero and work my way back to where I was. At the moment I do not really need much - one character for each, gen- male and female - and can build up on the way.

  • I would suggest you try the benchmark specified in this thread: https://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/53771/iray-starter-scene-post-your-benchmarks#latest

I had a system with a Quadro 2000 card from the year 2013, which benchmarked 90% at 3mins 46secs, and 100% at 50mins 56secs. The card was sufficiently old that DS didn't use it at all, despite the fact my PC was reporting 8Gb RAM for it. Basically the nVidia driver build needs to be 418.06 or higher, if not, DS won't use it even if the card has enough grunt to be useful, and many cards (my Quadro 2000 included) are not compatible with drivers above a certain build number. In the case of my Q 2000, the max build it would use was 377, so updating the drivers wouldn't help.

I replaced it with a second hand 6Gb GTX 1060. This appears to have a decent level of grunt and is used by DS. The talk in the various threads is that the card VRAM needs to be 2Gb for each figure + 2Gb. I suspect this is a bit high, but has worked for me since changing the card. Oh, and the benchmark was completed in 4mins 14 secs, compared to 50min 56secs on a 4 core, 8 thread CPU.

I would suggest you look at the driver standard available as well as the card itself & the VRAM when contemplating what to replace an existing card with.

    Richard

  • I too was using a 770 for daz studio and it worked well. I recently upgraded to a 1070 and have been very happy

  • Thanks for your replies.

@ Richard: that's sound information you give!

My driver version is Driver version    24.21.13.9836, being a 398,36 and too old to use it. No problem - yet -  as I have to restart from about zero after more than five years inactivity.
    The GTX 1660 is win10 only. I'm on 7Pro
the 1060 seems to be unavailable around here.

  • Erik, for me in the UK the majority of GTX 1060's seemed to be available as an import from the US or S.Korea on E-Bay. I actually got mine second hand from the UK, and while the headline price was higher, when including import duty & postage, it made no real difference on price. But, being in the same country as the seller made me feel a little happier in case something went wrong as I fitted it. There were not too many UK sellers, but IIRC those that were visible were ready to sell worldwide.

I'm on Win7 Pro as well, and the PC dates to 2013. I couldn't get anything too new for fear the rest of the hardware would be too out of date.

    Regards,

    Richard

I just wanted to mention that 3D Universe's Scene Tools Set 1 that was just released today looks to be very handy for hiding parts of your scene when you want to be able to focus on certain things (e.g. hiding everything except your figures when you're trying to fine tune the poses). I have a pretty decent machine, but trying to work with Stonemason's Urban Future 5 set while I was working on my Discarded image really bogged things down. I wish I'd had this tool a couple of weeks ago!

I don't know about you, but I can handle waiting for a while for a render. Lagging while I'm trying to re-position my character's hands will drive me crazy!
