Error opening saved scene

I've got a number of scene files that when I try to open return an error.

"An error occurred while reading the file, see the log file for more details."

When I check the log file it says this (only the file name is different depending on which I have tried to open):

2019-08-28 02:43:47.894 *** Scene Cleared ***

2019-08-28 02:43:48.156 D:/Users/chell/Documents/Daz Studio Scene Saves/Shadowrun-ITD/JasNEW2.duf (1,1): Syntax error - expected '{' or '['

2019-08-28 02:43:48.157 Error reading file, see log for more details.

Is there a way to fix this?

  • I'm afraid that sounds like a corrupt file - it is not even finding the opening bracket of the data that should be there. It may be possible to use an archive repair tool, but I wouldn't bet on it. If it is happening a lot I would check the basic drive health, and look at the security software (and any other non-default system tols) you are running.

  • These are files that were recovered through professional data recovery from my old laptop (long story short I was told my laptop would be fixed, they junked it instead, tossing the drive as well - because it was their fault they ended up trying to do data recovery on the drive to get back what they could), so I'm not worried about the health of this drive or anything like that. With some of the other files that were corrupted by them, it doesn't really surprise me. Still, if there's even the remote chance that I can save one or two of these, I'll take it. What kind of archive repair tool though?

  • It's not something I've ever tried, so I can't offer any useful advice - other than proceed with caution, and always work with a copy of the file.

Oh that I am, copied all the files that aren't working to a temp directory to work with along with one that I know works (I just made it a few days ago lol) and opened it just so I know what it is I'm looking for in the first place. I think I understand what that error means now after looking at the working file, if nothing else. Not sure if this will work, but it can't hurt to try. Thank you for your suggestion.
