Dark depth of field blur - iray

In the past, in 3delight, when there was transparent edges, it was sometimes dark behind the edges.  To fix that, you would set the background environment to white, and not render it.

I am doing a depth of field in iray, and the edges are dark in the transparent parts, but that trick above does not work.  An example is below.  I am rendering without a background to PNG, to add a background in postwork.

Is there a way to do this?  You can see it is a light background, but there is a dark edge everywhere that is blurred.  (the character is a transparent png, and the light blue background is added as a layer behind)

The picture is a compare of the DOF in iray, versus just a postwork blur of the character PNG, against another layer background.
