Hair Shader Question - Yvette Hair

Hello,

I have recently purchased Yvette Hair by AprilYSH and I have noticed that the hair shaders that come with it make the hair look very dry and without any shine. I have been playing with the shader settings based on how they are setup for other hairs that I own that have a nice glossy look but I am not having much luck. As an example, the look that I am trying to get is nicely shown in the attached promo image for Gracen, although the colour is different from what I am looking for. Does anyone have any suggestions on how I can achieve the look I am trying for, or any suggestions for tutorials or products that might be useful? I have looked at some of the shaders that OOT sells, but I am not sure if they will work for this hair: it seems like it is a strand based hair and not a layered hair.

Thanks in advance for any repies.

I own Yvetter hair and it does come with the usual maps etc so most of the shader sets for "general" hair should work. I tend to use Chevybabe's on it: https://www.daz3d.com/backlight--hair-shaders-for-iray- and it works really well though it depends on the look you are going for.

If you wanted to hand adjust to get more shine...try adjusting the "Glossy Layered Weight", lowering "Glossy Roughness" or adjusting Top Coat Weight/Top Coat Roughness. Also of note how much shine you get can be pretty dependant on what lighting you have in the scene (I tend to add a spotlight or something pointed directly at the hair if I want to get a harder shine - it is also necessary when the hair colors are lighter like blonde etc)

    Hope that helps.

Looks like the hair in that picture is part fibre hair based (the dry part pulled tight to her head) and part polygonal based (the shiny part that has been curled) but I could be wrong.

It's polygonal hair - possibly with soem polygons derived from a fibre tool, but not using the DS strand-based or dForce hair.

The file list shows presets for three different levels of shine in the Iray Maetrials, if you are rendering in Iray have you tried those?

    Hi Richard,

Yes I have tried those different Iray materials but still didn't see too much improvemnet. However I have been able to get the effect I was looking for by first converting a shader setting for a different hair to a shader preset, applying that preset to the Yvette hair and then changing the image maps so they used the ones for the Yvette hair. It seems that the original Yvette hair settings didn't have a top coat node and by tweaking that in the new shader I got the effect I was looking for. So thanks to everyone for their help.

I do however have a new question based on what I did. Rather that creat a new shader from a shader for a different hair, is there some way to add new nodes to an existing shader? I tried to figure out how to add a top coat node to the Yvette hair but couldn't figure out how to do that. Any suggestions around how that is done would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks again for any replies.

  • You may be able to skip the changing images if you hold down the cmd/ctrl key while double-clicking the preset and choosing Ignore for maps; you can also use the option dialogue when saving the preset to select only values and not maps. Of course you'd need to apply maps to any properties that don't have them in the Yvette hair.

If it's using the Iray Uber Base you should just need to give a non-zero value for Top Coat Strength to get the rest of the properties.

Thanks for the tips Richard. With repect to your topcoat suggestion, the shader was using Iray shaders but I couldn't find find Top Coat in the list at all. This isn't the first time I have seen things missing from Iray shaders either. For instance, sometimes Cutout Opacity is missing also.
