Trouble importing .obj file -- help!
I've got a simple .obj file with a related .mtl file that I'm trying to import into DAZ but I just can't get it to work.
The object comes in way too big as well as completely invisible -- no surface at all.
Would anyone be willing to explain, in simple steps, how this is supposed to work?

First of all: you have to understand that 3D models in obj format come from a different 'platform'
So it is very common that the scale is not similar to the DAZ standard.
Try import with scale 4000% instead of 100%.
And for the materials: it sometimes helps unticking the Read Surfaces box.
Then your object will pop up with no colors, but at least it is visible.
You can also open the material file in Notepad to check if there are no references to images in wrong folders.
edit: I re-read your post, just import it with scale let's say 10%.
Tjeb, thanks for the response!
I did what you suggested and now the object looks like the attached image. I have no idea what's causing that or how to even work with this.
That's the first thing to do...track down where the mtl file says the texture files should be...then either move them to where they should be or change the references to where they actually are. And most of the time, if they aren't in the same location (folder) as the obj and mtl file, they won't load, either.
I'm not sure, but did you check the opacity in the Surfaces tab?
In my picture I imported an .obj and turned the opacity to 0% on purpose.
And, meanwhile, have you imported another obj file just to see if that went as expected?
The first question I would ask is 'Where did you get this obj from?' Is this something you made yourself? If so, tell us which program you made it in. DS has import options for most common 3d modellers.
If it's an obj you downloaded, then you have no way of knowing what scale it was made to and you'll just have to experiment. The only way is to either use Custom and vary the percentage, or go through the other options - Bryce, Hexagon, Poser, etc, until you find the right one. I know it's a pain, but unless you know the original program, there's no other way.
By the way, 3d Max 2010 (and possibly later versions) had an issue where any obj exported will open in DS with all its materials set to 0% Opacity. So that's one possible explanation for the lack of materials.
