Only download Genesis 8 files in products that support 3 and 8

Is there any way to download only the Genesis 8 files in products that are built for both Genesis 8 and Genesis 3? I'm looking for anything I can do to save hard drive space and this seems like a logical place, given that I only ever work with Genesis 8.

How do you install?
I install through DIM, but I'm happy to change any (and all) of my behaviors if it makes a difference.
External drives are cheap and fast enough.
Good point, but I absolutely hate external drives. Having an extra thing hanging off my laptop just to get work done. And no matter which brand I buy, they seems to fail without fail in no time at all.
But, that said: which brand would you recommend? All of my previous externals have been spinning-disk drives, so maybe I'll have more luck with an external SSD
(And, all of that said, I still think there should be a solution to the problem that doesn't involve buying extra storage for data/content—the Genesis 3 stuff and 3delight materials/shaders—that I don't need.)
Since a lot of the products that support both Genesis 3 and 8 use the same geometry and textures for both, I have a feeling you're not going to save as much space as you might hope. I think all you'll be saving is a few duf and png files. One of the reasons that they support both is that the rigging and shapes are similar enough that it isn't a lot of extra work to do so.
Alternatively, it would be simple enough to write a batch file along the lines of:
Put that on your desktop and run it after every DIM download.
Gotcha! Thanks for this clarification. In looking at the files/folders taking up a lot of space, I must've misunderstood what was what and that there might be a logical way of separating things out. I really appreciate you taking the time to explain this to me.
Looks like I might be in the market for an external drive, after all. Or else I might just need to stop buying so much stuff!
Hahahhaha! Good luck with that last one. I keep telling myself I have "enough" with over 5600 DIM installs. People keep finding creative ways to make me keep "needing" more.
I thought quite a lot of things for Genesis 3 and 8 did already have separateb packages.
for example?
I can't recall - just my general recollection.
Well, Richard made me go look so I need to amend my original statement slightly. It appears from looking through my items that are listed as both Genesis 3 and Genesis 8 there is a pattern.
Props are like what I described. A single set of geometry and texture files with different presets to load them into Gen 3 or Gen 8 hands.
Likewise the few textures (mostly tatoos) I have that are for both generations are using common texture files with only the presets to load them being separated into Gen 3 and 8 folder structures.
Obviously pose sets don't require geometry; so it's only the pose files in the respective "People/Genesis 3 [Female/Male]/Poses" that would be duplicated.
However, hair items appear to be separate. For example, OOT's Liv Hair has two root folders:
And there are subfolders underneath each for the morphs. This seems to be consistent across the sampling I did of hair products from multiple vendors.
The only clothing I have that is packaged for both Genesis 3 and 8 is Aeon Soul's The Legend armor. That likewise has two root folders under the data folder for each figure.
Each of which has several files with geometry in them as well as morph support files.
So, it would seem there could be some space to be gained from not installing the Gen 3 versions of hair and clothing. However, those are also the products that are the hardest to segregate since you'd have to find the product folders under /data for each one. Much harder than just removing the Genesis 3 preset files with that delete batch file I mentioned. Especially since the naming of the folders is entirely up to the content artist that created them.
TBH, since you can only filter DIM based off the software required not the figure, I think you'll be fighting a losing battle if you try to manage it manually. And, let's be honest, if you stay around here long enough there will be a Genesis 3 character sale which is so attractive you won't be able to stop yourself, and then you'll have a use for all those things that you thought were just taking up space!
At least that's what I keep telling myself when I look at my Daz Library folder size...
I don't see separate installation packages for Genesis 3 and Genesis 8 in DIM or Daz Connect for products that I own that have both 3 and 8 in the product title. So I wondered if you had a specific example of products that do separate the generations into separate installation packages.
Yeah, the examples I gave only had one install package. The files were only divided once they were installed into the /data folder.
