Render to show environment background?

How do you show the environment background when you render? (Especially so that it shows up through windows and reflects in mirrors etc)

I've selected "Visible in Renderer" in Environment and in the edit window I am able to see my background. But when I render, it shows up as white? I've also tried turning the infinite skydome off and on...

You need to have an HDRI in the Enivironment Map slot in the render tab and make sure that Draw Dome is set to on.

There is some extensive information about the various ways to add a background to your scene in the Question about skydomes and backdrops thread.

  • I think if you use Sun and Sky instead of Dome and Scene you will get a white background.

You could try create a Primitive plane and add your background in the surface tab Base Color
and place close to your environment.

  • Hmm so I'm a bit confused at the different answers - none of which seeem to work btw...

The Dome and Environment Map are in Render Settings. As I understasnd, this is differnt than the Background in the Environment Backdrop type right?

I'd like to have the Environment Backdrop render (or is that not possible)? This isn't a HDR image but just a simple 2D regular photo.

I've tried using Finite Box and Infinite Sphere in Dome Mode but both don't seem to render the Environment Backdrop.

  • The Backdrop in the Environment pane, I thought, renders by default - it's certainly an option there. You may need to turn Draw Dome off in Render Settings - I'm not sure, and I never use the Environment pane for real.

If you go to the Environment Pane there is a drop down menu for the Background with three choices. They are White, Black or Image. To get the image to render you have to choose the Image setting, choosing one of the others gives a black or a white background.

  • I ended up using just the option for primitive plane + surface texture

For some reason the background shows up correctly in the scene but when rendered its sizing gets readjusted

    Thanks for all the suggestions!
