is there a Iray redraw delay between preview and navigating scene?

when working in Iray preview in the viewport on complex scenes navigating the x,y,z axis on figures, etc is very slow. switching back to texture or wireframe is not that fast either. Is there a way I can tell DS not to start calculating the Iray preveiw right away; like after resting the pointer for 5 seconds so I can navigate with a little more fluidity?

What's your Display Optimization setting (Preferences > Interface > Display Optimization) ? Use "Best" for fastest navigation. Sorry misread you, this is for general scene navigation, not Iray update in particular. You may look at your Iray Draw settings instead.
Also, in 4.11 and 4.12, backdrop images slow down Iray updating proportionally with the size of the image (a large one e.g. 3000x4000 may increase update time from 1 to over 10 seconds). No such problem in 4.10.
BTW, with some scenes, doing a quick 100x100 render of the scene and keeping it open in the background will speed up Iray preview update (keeps some stuff loaded in memory I presume).
Draw settings, DrawStyle: NVIDIA Iray; Response Threshold (msec).
There is also the factor of smoothing and sub-d added to the delay. When you reposition any object, smoothing resets and then calculates again. If you turn smoothing and sub-d off for every object, including your model and any hair, it'll speed things up quite a bit. You can then re-enable smoothing just before final rendering and make any necessary adjustments.
Keep in mind that detailed poses are often setup with smoothing on, so there may be gaps where you don't expect with smoothing off.

Following on Dijitul's advice about Sub-D and smoothing, 3D Universe's Daz Studio 4 Scene Tools 1 product allows you to turn Sub-D on and off globally with a click of a button. Also will hide things you don't need to see (like background props when all you're doing is finalizing a pose). Very useful addition that I've found myself using quite a bit.
