When I use ubershaders to add sss to a figure, I get a lot of new dials on the surface editor, including some referring to "displacement2". I can't see where these dials have any effect on the resulting render. Is this just a meaningless item?

Are you using UberSurface 2? If so, you'll notice that it has multiple layers, allowing you to multi-texture an object. The displacement2 is for the 2nd layer. On its own, it works like any other displacement but when combined with blending, it can add interesting effects to the surface. You could, for example, displace mud on the ground, giving the concrete one displacement map and using another for the mud itself.

If it's disabled it will have no affect, so you can try it out and then disable it to see the difference.

I must be missing something, because when I load a displacement map onto displacement2, select displacement2 "on", set the strength to 200, the min to -1 and the max to 1.0, I get no result in the rendering.

wait, I got it. I hadn't clicked the layer 2 active switch.
