Daz 4.5 ...

Let's say I want to stay with 4.5 for now and have the older installer that came with it. If I buy stuff today, will I run into any problems? Will I be forced to update the installer or Daz before downloading new content? TIA for any input.

You won't be forced to upgrade, though you will have a few problems (material presets for Genesis 2 for example)
