Basic question from semi-newbie

Not sure whether I'm a true Noob or not, been poking at Bryce for some time now but it's still pretty much of a mystery to me....renderings are embarrassingly ugly...oh well, maybe in a decade or so I'll become intermediate, at least!

My question concerns the ground plane, I've been following a beginner tutorial where near the end, we delete the ground plane (using Edit>Clear) and add a flat black background...but my ground plane won't go away ! I know I did it correctly, just selected the red mesh thing and made it disappear, or so it would seem. So why does it continue to show in the preview or a fast render? Argh!! :shut:

Kindly advise....and thanks in advance

I usually just make mine invisible. In the mat editor turn transparency to 100% and then click the little arrow at the top and click "blend transparency""
