Volumetric Creation

I've searched all sorts of tutorials on how to create a volumetric object, but all I am coming up with are tutorials on how to use existing volumetric objects (e.g. how to use Epic Props' Godrays product.)
I don't want to know how to use an existing asset, I want to learn how to create a volumetric object.
Can someone direct me to some tutorials on this subject. I keep striking out.

Try this video from Sickleyield : Creating Dust and Atmosphere in Iray
glaseye and JonnyRay, I think with those two tutorials I think I can figure it out. "Atmosphere" is what I should have been searching for.

Hey, Everyone,
The Sickleyield video was perfect and I was able to create my first scene with some "atmosphere".
Thank you JonnyRay and glaseye. All of the links were valuable.

Well, I've managed to master the godray technique. So I don't have to go through it every time, I created a preset for a godray column and render settings.
Thanks again for pointing me in the right direction.
Very nice, Brent. I think (to my eye) the ray is a little too sharp, but that's a great look at adding the atmosphere to the overall scene. Happy to see you're on your way with this!
