what is the go to setting to reduce the brightness on iray materials?

many setting at play here but just wondering if there is simply one to do that while preserving the rest ?

  • The first thing I usually do is to change the diffuse color from a white to a grey. That seems to work most of the time to dull the brightness of the item in question so the light doesn't blow it out.

    ok thanks...

  • <nod> I came across similar situations a few years back when I was playing with the Luxus render engine. The actual issue is that a pure white Diffuse Color (which is OK in 3Delight) translates in Iray into an unnaturally bright rendering of the Diffuse texture map. This doesn't render well in brightly lit situations because the Diffuse texture is already as bright as it'll go. A grey Diffuse Color fixes this because there's a bit of leeway to brighten the texture.

Check the online manual; it isn't quite complete yet, but it does warn about other parameters which should never be set at the max value or at zero, otherwise you get odd-looking "doesn't occur in nature" effects in your final render.
