Loading dForce clothing to other generations

Is it possible to use dForce clothes for G8F on G3F? Are the items loaded using the normal auto-fit (for that matter, I'm unclear whether the items are loaded to G8F as conforming items or something else). I'm especially trying to stay away from the distortions of the mesh that usually accompany trans-generational or rescaled fitment - if the clothing can be simulated, it seems like it shouldn't need to be conforming in the first place.

Yes, they are (usually) just regular cnformers and can be AutoFitted. Some are props and just need placing. They aren't like the OptiTex items, locked to the load shape.
You can. Just make sure the figure is not selected when you load the clothing. dForce will respect the scale you have set the item at.
Because G3 and older have a different starting pose from G8, you will need to set up animated drapes in order to get some clothing to drape right.
Alternatively, you can manually place the clothing and use its own nodes to match the pose of your figure. If you do that, I recommened that you parent the dForce clothing to the figures hip or pelvis and then carefully adjust the pose. If you are using a pose preset, check if it has G3 and G8 versions. That will make posing the clothing much easier.
Take a look at this tutorial from Sickleyield:

It shows how to move clothes between G3 and G8 without autofitting. Autofitting can sometimes really mess things up, and G3 and G8 are such similar figures that it's often not necessary if you know how to avoid it.
That said, having autofitted various items between various models, it doesn't usually break the dforceability of clothing.
Thanks for the guidance!
