Cuda is the programming language a program must be written in order for it to be runnable on an Nvidia GPU. OptiX is the name of the API created by Nvidia specifically for performing raytracing calculations, and as of OptiX version 6.0 or newer OptiX fully supports/implements hardware accelerated raytracing on RTCore equipped GPUs. Therefore any raytracing graphics program written using OptiX version 6.0 or later utilizes RTCores when run in conjunction with an RTX GPU.
Bringing this back to Daz Studio, If you do a render using an RTX GPU in the latest version (4.12.0.086), open up the log file afterward and do a search for "OptiX" you will see the following two lines:
Thereby indicating full RTX support and RTCores being used for raytracing.
If you do the same using a non-RTX GPU you will instead see the following:
Thereby indicating no RTX support and OptiX Prime being used for raytyracing.
I downgraded to 4.11, and accidently found a process pg_ctl.exe running. I never ever noticed it before. Is this a leftover from 4.12 or it simply is rarely used?
Had to rollback to 4.10 as a few older Poser models seem to crash 4.12 upon trying to load them. In particular, the Rooster for Poser available at Rendo and a couple freebie outfits for Victoria 4. All the items that crashed 4.12 load just fine in 4.10.
That is the Postgres CMS main program.
So have the requirements on the graphics card driver changed from 4.10 for DS itself ? (I don't care about iRAY or dFORCE).
If you are only going to use 3Delight, no.
thanks thats exactly what i was looking for - although i have "rend info : Using OptiX version 6.1.2" in my log, rt cores dont seem to be used because when i uncheck the "optix prime acceleration" in daz my rendering time does not change) i only installed daz studio pro 4.12.086 and nvidia 431.86 studio drivers on a brand new laptop do i need to install something else to use optix ? . thanks
The optix prime flag is deprecated and no more used in 4.12. It always uses optix prime when no rtx is detected, and it always uses optix when rtx is detected. That's why your rendering time does not change.
Se the second entry for 4.12.1.8 http://docs.daz3d.com/doku.php/public/software/dazstudio/4/change_log#4_12_1_8
I'm downloading 4.12 and I see there's not the scene builder anymore as a separate download. Is it because it has been included in the main installer ? Or is it missing in the distribution ?
I don't think it has been as eparate apckage for a while - I can't recall it, and the zip is from 2014. The feature is part of DS, the content is in the Starter Essentials products.
Just downloaded the 4.12 (Win 64) installer from https://www.daz3d.com/get_studio, and it installed 4.11. What gives? (NM: It does install 4.12, but for some reason the installer and shortcut icon says 4.11.)
What is this Avatar SDK mentioned in the 4.12.1.x private channel release notes? An extension of the Morph 3D/Taffy avatar system they said they was working on?
I don't know, but I did wonder if it might be related to Face Transfer (perhaps it's the underlying technology).
OK, thanks.
In my understanding I'm losing about 2 GB of GPU memory of my GTX1060 when using 4.12 due to the change in Optix settings.
That causes larger scenes to crash and I have to render them on CPU only.
I was expecting issues like this to be identified by Daz QA and getting a disclaimer before upgrading.
I logged a support ticket and was advised to revert to 4.11, but I already bought the unlimited face transfer key. I could return that, only to rebuy it at a higher price once Daz and or Nvidia have fixed the issue. Does it make me feel like a valued customer?
My impression is that Daz became a slave to Nvidia when deciding on the Iray path, and now Nvidia wants to force users to upgrade to RTX cards.
There were some Soft Body Scripts, they worked all the way up to and including 4.10, but something that was changed in 4.11 killed them (and others). Hoping what ever it was that was changed, has now been fixed.
See here for the discussion : https://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/334381/breast-movement#latest
for now I am simply not using DAZ studio to render
to get 4.11 do you have to contact support?
I found that build great and was hoping what was broken for me rendering animation with heavy scenes in 4.12 going to CPU second frame would be fixed soon but apparently it's not a priority
..
In the 4.11 distribution there was a IM00013176-43_SceneBuilderforDAZStudio.zip file containing the SceneBuilder.json file to be installed in the resources folder. The 4.12 distribution doesn't include this file anymore and after installing there's not the SceneBuilder.json file in the resources folder. Do I have to copy it from the 4.11 distribution ? Or is this a file that is not needed anymore ?
I am told that the zip should still be In DIM (but not available for manual download) although it is only a fallback as the front-end was rewritten around the time of DS 4.7.x.x. Rob adds links to a couple of his posts on customising Scene Builder:

I'm not sure if it's relevant, I suspect not, but there was a bug that interfered with the use of polylines in dForce Dynamic AddOns - if that is it, or related, it was fixed in 4.12.0.45.

Someone at daz needs to update the document center . its more than a little outdated . geesh
http://docs.daz3d.com/doku.php/public/software/dazstudio/4/new_features/start
Yeah, i don't think i'm gonna update to 4.12, even if i want to use the RTX in my card, the bugs surfacing aren't worth it.
Not entirely true. I turn objects invisible to decrease render load times and iray render times. it works like a flip of a switch for me. literally.
I think it depends on how you hide things.I believe it was Richard who pointed out if you use Cutout Opacity to hide materials, Iray still has to process the materials to determine they are not visible. In the scene tab, clicking on the "eye" icon to toggle visibility works better. When that's not possible, and you need to hide a material zone, I believe it is better to hide the mesh in the Tool Settings for the Geometry Editor than use Cutout Opacity. (I'm deliberately not going into all the ways the Geometry Editor can help you hide mesh…)
So there are differences between manual download and DIM distributions. Then is the G8 update for face transfer available for manual download ? Or is it available only with DIM ?
If you are referring to the G8 Starter Essentials packages, one can download it from one's Product Library in the store account.
The reason the Scene Bulder product is DIM only is that they are isntalled "like a plug-in", it puts files in the application folder.
I'm trying to report an issue I'm having with Daz Studio via the Daz 3D Help Center. (It's an intermittent problem I've now seen in both 4.11 and 4.12.) The Tech Ticket Tracker has nothing that's relevant. Is there somewhere else to file a Bug Report?
No, but what you need is this page.
Near the top right of the page you linked too as a button you click to login in via & than a 'Submit a Request' button becomes available for you to actually file a real new ticket or attend to a prior ticket you've written.
