4.11 Cannot Dock Panes to Right hand Side of Window

I was messing with layout, I thought I would make some minor changes. I got myself into a weird setup where the Right Hand Side (RHS) of the viewport was locked to the RHS of the main window, ie under the docked panes on the right and therefore the widgets were inaccessible. I tried to drag it away but nothing worked.

I was able to get back my normal set of panes (Parameters, Shaping, Posing, Surfaces) in a single floating window but still I could not dock it to the RHS of the main window.

I tried various methods including setting the layout to default settings using Edit--> Preferences--> Interface--> Restore Factory Defaults. This did NOT actually restore to default settings at all.

I reinvoked my normal panes from Window-->Panes.  I was still unable to get them to dock to the RHS of the main window, and the RHS of the Viewport is still locked to the RHS of the main window.

I cannot currently use Daz Studio.

  • Install 4.12, released today.

  • OK, try 4.12. I actually had the 4.12 beta already installed, which had exactly the same problem.

DIM would not let me login for most of a day, saying my userid or password was invalid. After trying about 30 times over several hours, it came back up, and I uninstalled 4.11 and the 4.12 beta, and installed 4.12.

Unfortunately 4.12 reuses the layout from before, so the problem is still there, and as I said before, restore to factory defaults does not restore to actual factory defaults. If I knew where to find the files that persist between installs, I could actually get back to zero.

    Window > Workspace > Lock Docking/Undocking  Ctrl+U

  • Have you tried Window>Workspace>Select Layout? Have you checked the that Window>Workspace>Lock Docking/Undocking is not on (from memory of the command name)

  • Lock docking is not on. I can dock Shaping and Posing in the horizontal tabset next to Viewport and Render Library, but not on the right side of the main window.

  • Are you getting overflow on the right - elements of the Viewport under the pane stack, or parameter sliders in the right-hand panes projecting under the edge of the window?

  • When I have the Daz Studio main window maximized, ie using the entire screen, the widgets appear. when I restore the window so it only occupies a part of the screen, the widgets are invisible off to the right and there appears to be no way to go and get them.  My original problem was that the widgets were inaccessible, and then when I undocked the right hand panes (parameters, hoping, posing, surfaces) I started having this “cannot dock to RHS” problem. Now my more fundamental problem is that Daz3d is completely unusable, both 4.11 and 4.12.

As I said before Daz Studio is therefore completely unusable. I have used the restore to default settings option several times, I have uninstalled and reinstalled vi DIM several times, and I have nothing left to try.

I guess I shouldn’t complain as I am retired and my livelihood does not depend on this, but I have been using Daz for about three years now and have enjoyed it. I understand this is free software and is therefore unsupported, so I have to accept it is the way it is.

i would like to suggest to the developers that the function named “restore to default settings” should do exactly that, and not a random subset of default settings, ignoring several that the user may have inadvertently used.

i have been here before, as I spent almost my entire career (34 years) in the software development business for a very large computer company.

  • That sounds like the known issue with having the Shader Mixer/Shader Builder panes docked with the Viewport - if you close them you should be OK, at least on widget visibility.

  • I do not have either of those panes active anywhere.

  • So their tabs are not in the same group as the Viewport? A screen shot of the whole UI might help to understand what is going on.
